Career Summary

As a newspaper reporter and editor I improved the writing and coverage at several award-winning business and community newspapers before helping to pioneer a national, critically-acclaimed, online news service in 1995 at an experimental division of AT&T. 


I then used my editorial and online skills to boost the economic value of several startup companies, including Lycos, before leading the Boston.com breaking news team to cover some of the biggest news stories in New England and the nation.

Book of Odds and others

Managing Editor/Online Editorial Consultant

2009-Present

Organized and planned the successful launch of the Book of Odds website in the fall of 2009, which was praised in the Boston Globe, New York Times and Wall Street Journal as well as won a 2009 Emerging Media Award from Summit International for "best new product/service website." 

Conceived and created several websites and mobile sites for clients and for fun, including the lifestyle blog, RootsLiving.com

2003-2009

Led a 24/7 online news team to cover the top news stories in New England and the nation, growing traffic to record levels which averaged about 1 million unique visitors per day.

Broke new ground in online content creation while orchestrating breaking news coverage using photo galleries, audio slideshows, message boards, chats, maps, videos, surveys and other interactive features.

Improved breaking news coverage by guiding and encouraging veteran newspaper journalists to use their talents online.

Designed and implemented the company's first training program to transition newspaper editors from print to online.

Successfully fulfilled a company mandate to increase video on the site by supplying news producers with easy-to-use, online-ready, video cameras and by creating some of the first, short, news videos for the site using those cameras.

Increased traffic by using best online practices and following search engine optimization strategies.

Created a curriculum from scratch that taught graduate students about the evolution of online news while encouraging them to go out into the world and break new ground. Class received hands-on experience creating an online news site and then maintaining it.

Improved the small business section by writing about the human drama behind entrepreneurship.

Created and launched the newspaper's first regular feature on residential real estate.

Routinely interviewed on AM morning radio show about business issues.

Helped negotiate multi-million dollar deals with outside content partners and planned integration of content into the Lycos.com portal.

Redesigned, refocused and expanded the small business and real estate web guides.

Created a world class news and information service for mental health professionals called, "PsychLink." Launched the PsychLink website on time and under budget. Negotiated contracts with niche content partners, including Reuters Medical News.

Worked with a small editorial team to create and launch what is sometimes referred to as the world's first group blog, called "Lead Story."

Wrote for and edited this critically-acclaimed and award-winning news site which was praised in a U.S. News and World Reports cover story on the eight best places to visit on the web.

Also updated the news, business and front pages of the Interchange Online Network, an experimental project during the web's infancy.
